About
Gordon Reese Cabin provides modern, well-equipped lodging in the scenic Picnic Meadows area near Chief Joseph Pass along the Montana-Idaho border. Built in 2001 at the base of the Anaconda Mountain Range, the cabin sits in an evergreen forest with abundant wildlife including elk, deer, moose, bears, and mountain lions. The two-story cabin sleeps up to 8 people with two double beds and four twin beds with mattresses in the upstairs loft. The main floor features a well-equipped kitchen with propane cooking stove, sink for waste water, tables with benches, counter space with stools, and cooking utensils. Heat is provided by a wood stove with firewood stored in the basement. The cabin has propane-powered lighting and solar power equipment. An outdoor vault toilet is provided. No drinking water is available; guests must bring their own water or melt snow in winter. During the winter season (December 1 to April 15), the cabin serves a dual purpose as an overnight rental and daytime public warming hut. The main floor is open to cross-country skiers and snowshoers during the day, while overnight guests can close off the upstairs sleeping area for privacy. The cabin provides access to 32 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails maintained by the Bitterroot XC Ski Club and Lost Trail Powder Mountain Ski Area. The cabin is located along both the Lewis and Clark Trail and the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, with long-distance CDNST hikers passing by daily during summer months. Access is via a 1-mile hike or ski from the Chief Joseph Pass trailhead parking area.
Directions
From Wisdom, travel west on Highway 43 for 26 miles to the parking area at the top of Chief Joseph Pass. From the parking area, walk or ski 1 mile along the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail to reach the cabin.
