About

Hoback Guard Station is a historic rental cabin built in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Located approximately 33 miles from Jackson, Wyoming and 59 miles from Big Piney along US Highway 189/191, this working ranger station offers guests a scenic backcountry experience with modern conveniences. The cabin accommodates up to 6 people with 3 sets of bunkbeds. It features electric heat, a fully-equipped kitchen with electric stove, refrigerator, sink, cookware and utensils, and an indoor bathroom with shower. However, water and power are never guaranteed. Potable water is typically available only from mid-June to mid-September, depending on weather conditions, as freezing temperatures force the system to be shut down. Winter visitors must bring their own water and be prepared to walk in from the highway, as the access road is not plowed. Sitting at 6,600 feet elevation, the guard station is surrounded by willows and pines with a creek running alongside. It offers spectacular views of the Gros Ventre Mountain Range below Monument Ridge. The area provides excellent access to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails leading to Cliff Creek Falls, Shoal Creek Falls, and the historic Monument Ridge Lookout. Nearby Cliff Creek and Hoback River provide fishing opportunities, while Raspberry Ridge, Jack Creek, and Fisherman Creek ATV trails are minutes away. Snake River Canyon, just 15 miles west, offers rafting, kayaking, and climbing. Pets and livestock are allowed; horse corrals are available behind the cabin. Certified weed-free hay is required. No smoking is permitted inside, and all trash must be packed out. Reservations are required through Recreation.gov, and access is by combination lock.
