About
Headlands Beach State Park in Mentor, Ohio, boasts the distinction of having the largest natural sand beach in the state, stretching over a mile along the shores of Lake Erie. This popular destination draws approximately two million visitors annually who come to enjoy swimming in marked areas during summer months, sunbathing on the expansive 35-acre beach, and hunting for beach glass along the shoreline. The eastern breakwall is a favored spot for anglers seeking Lake Erie fish species, while the western portions of the beach offer quieter stretches for beachcombing and relaxation. Beyond the beach, the park features scenic hiking trails, picnic areas with tables and grills, and a playground for families. Adjacent to the main park area is the Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve, one of the few remaining natural dune and swale complexes in Ohio, providing exceptional birdwatching opportunities especially during migration seasons. The park's facilities include multiple restrooms with flush toilets, concession stands during peak season, and ample parking areas to accommodate the park's popularity. With free admission and year-round access, Headlands Beach State Park offers both summer recreation and off-season tranquility along Lake Erie's scenic coastline.
