About

Headlands Beach State Park, located in Mentor and Painesville Township in Lake County, Ohio, boasts the state's largest natural sand beach. The mile-long beach attracts approximately two million visitors annually for swimming, sunbathing, and beach glass hunting along Lake Erie. The park opened to the public in 1953 and has been recognized by CNN as one of the top 20 beaches in the United States. The park provides day-use facilities including change booths, restrooms, picnic tables, grills, and a seasonal concession area. A breakwall at the east end of the beach offers fishing opportunities for bass, perch, walleye, salmon, and carp. Adjacent to the park is Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve, one of the finest remaining Lake Erie beach and dune communities, and the 644-acre Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve with hiking trails and exceptional birding (over 200 species). This is a day-use only park with no overnight camping facilities. Campers seeking overnight accommodations should consider nearby Punderson State Park, which offers a campground, cabins, and lodge approximately 30 minutes away.
