Special Weather Statement issued February 8 at 1:57PM AKST by NWS Juneau AK
After a series of shortwaves that brought rain and gusty winds over the past few days, a stronger front will approach southeast Alaska from the west on Tuesday. South to southeast winds will increase through the day Tuesday. Confidence is increasing for windy conditions with strong gusts Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the front pushes west to east across southeast Alaska. Gales with storm force gusts will be possible ahead and along the frontal passage, especially along north-south oriented channels and along the coastal waters. A period of moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible with the frontal passage, but with the progressive nature of the front, flooding is not expected at this time. Another gale to potentially storm force low will quickly lift northeast into the Gulf and looks to push across southeast Alaska sometime later Wednesday into Thursday, bringing another round of strong gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall. Further details on the high wind and flooding potential for this system will be honed in on in the coming days. Looking further ahead, a cooling trend is favored to commence in the wake of these passing systems by late work week into the weekend. Snow levels will begin to lower and a colder outflow wind pattern could set up by late weekend. This could result in a return of snow for some coastal communities, especially across northern southeast Alaska. Further details on the pattern change and snow potential will be honed as the weekend approaches.
About
Harvey Lake Cabin sits on the west end of Harvey Lake on Woewodski Island at an elevation of 100 feet, surrounded by forested hills in the Tongass National Forest. The A-frame cabin features two single wooden bunks, a sleeping loft for additional guests, a wood stove for heat, and a large deck with lake views. The cabin is accessible by float plane (18 miles from Petersburg) or by boat (21 miles) followed by a half-mile hike along the Harvey Lake Trail, which follows Harvey Creek from saltwater to the lake. The cabin includes an outhouse with pit toilet and a rowboat with oars for lake exploration. Firewood is generally provided but not guaranteed. Guests must bring sleeping bags, cook stove, cooking gear, food, and all other supplies, and pack out all trash. The lake offers fishing for cutthroat trout, and coho salmon can be found near Harvey Creek's mouth in early fall. The area features a sandy beach, picnic site, and swimming area. Woewodski Island has a rich mining history, and the surrounding area is home to black bears, deer, moose, grouse, and waterfowl. The Harvey Lake Trail trailhead can be difficult to locate; look for red and white markers on the beach east of a small islet and south of private cabins. In fall, winter, and early spring, frozen lake surfaces may prevent float plane access.
Directions
By float plane: 18 miles from Petersburg. By boat: 21 miles from Petersburg to trailhead, then a half-mile hike to the cabin. Look for red and white diamond-shaped marker at trailhead on beach, east of a small islet and south of private cabins. Best boat mooring is 50 yards south of marker. Boats will go dry at low tide unless anchored in the hole south of the trailhead. In fall, winter, and early spring, frozen lake surfaces may prevent float plane access.
