About
Harvey Lake Cabin is a remote Forest Service rental cabin located at the west end of Harvey Lake on Woewodski Island in the Tongass National Forest. Situated at 100 feet elevation near Duncan Canal, this A-frame cabin offers solitude surrounded by forested hills. The cabin sleeps multiple guests with two single wooden bunks and a sleeping loft, heated by a wood stove. A large deck overlooks the lake, and a pit toilet outhouse is provided. A rowboat with oars is available at the cabin, though visitors may wish to bring a small outboard motor and must supply their own life jackets. Access is by float plane (18 miles from Petersburg) or by boat (21 miles from Petersburg) followed by a half-mile hike along Harvey Creek. The trailhead can be difficult to locate; look for the red and white diamond-shaped marker on the beach. During fall, winter, and early spring, float plane access may be impossible when the lake surface is frozen. Activities include fishing for cutthroat trout in the lake and coho salmon near Harvey Creek mouth in early fall, swimming at the nearby sandy beach, boating, hunting in the surrounding hills, and wildlife viewing. Black bears, deer, moose, grouse, and waterfowl inhabit the area. Visitors must bring their own drinking water, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, and food, and must pack out all trash.
Directions
By float plane from Petersburg: 18 miles directly to Harvey Lake. In fall, winter, and early spring, float planes may be unable to land due to frozen lake surface. By boat from Petersburg: 21 miles to Woewodski Island, then a half-mile hike to the cabin. Look for the red and white diamond-shaped trailhead marker on the beach, east of a small islet and south of private cabins. Best boat mooring is 50 yards south of the marker; boats will go dry at low tide unless anchored in the hole south of the trailhead.
