Kah Sheets Bay Cabin is a remote USFS rental cabin located at the mouth of Kah Sheets Creek on the south end of Kupreanof Island in the Tongass National Forest. The name derives from the Tlingit term "by the fisheries," reflecting the area's abundant fish populations. This hunter-style cabin accommodates up to 4 guests with single bunks, and includes oil and wood stoves, a wooden table and benches, covered porch with skylights, pit toilet, and axe/maul. Firewood is provided but not guaranteed. The cabin is accessible by boat or float plane from Petersburg (24 miles), or via a 2.75-mile boardwalk trail from Kah Sheets Lake (float plane access only). Due to creek deposition creating gravel bars, boat access requires a minimum 14-foot tide. The surrounding terrain is flat muskeg and second-growth forest, with a 776-foot hill separating the bay from Kah Sheets Lake. Anglers will find excellent fishing for steelhead, trout, and salmon (pink, sockeye, and coho). Bear, grouse, and waterfowl hunting is available in designated areas. The tide flat offers prime spring bird migration viewing in early May. The boardwalk trail provides access to two waterfalls and wildlife viewing opportunities. Old logging roads offer additional hiking options.

Directions

Accessible by boat or float plane, 24 miles from Petersburg. May also be reached by hiking the 2.75-mile boardwalk trail from Kah Sheets Lake, which is accessible by float plane only. Boat access requires at least a 14-foot tide to navigate the area in front of the cabin due to gravel bars deposited by Kah Sheets Creek. Located at mouth of Kah Sheets Creek, south end of Kupreanof Island.
