About
Kah Sheets Bay Cabin sits at the mouth of Kah Sheets Creek on the south end of Kupreanof Island, 24 miles from Petersburg. The name derives from the Tlingit term meaning "by the fisheries," reflecting the excellent fishing available here for steelhead, trout, and salmon (pink, sockeye, and coho). The surrounding terrain consists of second-growth forest and flat muskeg, with abundant wildlife including black bears, deer, moose, grouse, and waterfowl. Spring bird migration viewing on the tide flat is particularly notable in early May. The hunter-style cabin features four single wooden bunks, a table with benches, both an oil heater (#1 stove oil only) and a wood stove, plus a covered porch with skylights. A pit toilet outhouse is provided, along with an axe and maul. Firewood may be available but is not guaranteed. Visitors must bring their own heating oil, drinking water, sleeping gear, cooking equipment, and food, and must pack out all trash. Access is via boat or float plane. Boat access has become more challenging due to creek deposition creating gravel bars; visitors now need at least a 16-foot tide (up to 18-foot depending on conditions) to navigate in front of the cabin. Alternatively, the cabin can be reached by hiking the 2.75-mile boardwalk trail from Kah Sheets Lake, which is accessible only by float plane.
