About
Ravens Roost Cabin is a purpose-built alpine retreat in the Tongass National Forest, designed with a loft-level door to allow entry during deep winter snow. Situated at 1,745 ft elevation on Mitkof Island above Petersburg Airport, the cabin offers sweeping views of the surrounding terrain and access to excellent backcountry recreation. The 16x20 ft cabin sleeps 6-8 on wooden bunks and a sleeping loft, with a propane heater for warmth. Amenities include a covered deck, indoor table and benches, and a pit toilet outhouse. There is no potable water; guests must bring their own supply or treat water from adjacent muskeg pools, ponds, or melted snow. Access is via the Raven Trail, a 4.2-mile hike from the trailhead at the water towers behind Petersburg Airport. The trail gains 1,800 ft in elevation with a moderate first mile, a very steep middle section, and a flatter final mile along the ridge. Allow 3 hours for the ascent. Winter access is also possible via snowshoe or the 5.4-mile Twin Ridge Ski Trail. The area is popular for cross-country skiing, telemark skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, wildlife viewing, and berry picking. Eagles, moose, deer, porcupines, and black bears inhabit the surrounding terrain.
Directions
From Petersburg, the cabin is accessed via the Raven Trail. The trailhead is located at the water towers behind Petersburg Airport. The trail is 4.2 miles long and gains 1,800 ft in elevation.
