Special Weather Statement issued May 24 at 2:21AM EDT by NWS Gray ME

2:21 AM — 12:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures later this Holiday weekend in the mid 60s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph across parts of the area. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About

Moose Mountain Shelter sits atop Moose Mountain along the Appalachian Trail, accessible via a loop trail from the main Moose Mountain Trail. This traditional Adirondack-style three-sided shelter was constructed entirely by hand by the Dartmouth Outing Club, with no power tools used in its building. It replaced an earlier shelter that was located on the old Clark Pond Loop Trail. The shelter accommodates up to 8 people and serves thru-hikers, section hikers, and overnight backpackers traveling the AT through this stretch of New Hampshire. A privy is available on a separate side path, and two tent platforms provide overflow camping options for when the shelter is full. Water is available nearby but is described as marginally reliable and must be treated before drinking. This shelter falls within the Pemigewasset Ranger District of the White Mountain National Forest and is located near Hanover, NH, one of the few towns where the Appalachian Trail runs directly down Main Street.

Directions

Access via the Moose Mountain Trail (Appalachian Trail) from its junction with Goose Pond Road or Three Mile Road near Hanover, NH. The shelter is located on a loop trail off the main Moose Mountain Trail atop the ridge.
