Trapper John Shelter

Open — Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations accepted.

About

Built and maintained by the Dartmouth Outing Club, Trapper John Shelter is a classic Appalachian Trail backcountry shelter located in the White Mountain National Forest near Lyme, New Hampshire. The 3-walled shelter is accessible via a 1.1-mile hike from Dorchester Road, following the Holts Ledge Trail (part of the Appalachian Trail) and a short spur trail. The shelter can accommodate 8 people on the floor and offers basic amenities including a composting privy and a fire ring. Water is available from a nearby stream, though all water should be treated before use. The site is free and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations. Named after the M*A*S*H character who allegedly graduated from Dartmouth, this shelter provides a rustic backcountry experience for hikers traversing the Appalachian Trail or exploring the Holts Ledge area. The shelter is located between Smarts Mountain and Moose Mountain in a scenic forested setting. Hikers should be prepared for primitive conditions and practice Leave No Trace principles.

Directions

From Dorchester Road near the Dartmouth Skiway, hike 1.1 miles via Holts Ledge Trail (Appalachian Trail) and a short spur trail to reach the shelter.
