About
Stone Cellar Campground is situated in the expansive inter-mountain grasslands of Saguache Park, offering spectacular views of the La Garita Mountains and easy access to one of Colorado's most pristine wilderness areas. The campground's six sites occupy open terrain beside Saguache Creek, which offers quality fishing for rainbow, cutthroat, brown, and brook trout. Each site includes a fire ring and sun shade structure. This is a truly remote destination requiring significant travel on unpaved roads. From Saguache, the drive covers 58 miles total, with 36 miles on dirt roads via Highway 114 and Forest Roads 750 and 787. The campground serves as a base for exploring the La Garita Wilderness, accessing 4WD routes on Forest Roads 774 and 776, mountain biking, and fall big game hunting. The area is adjacent to a working cow camp where visitors may observe ranching operations during summer months. Facilities are minimal: vault toilets are provided but there is no potable water, so visitors must bring their own supply. The campground operates first-come-first-served with no advance reservations. Due to the elevation and location, access is typically limited by seasonal road closures from March 15 through May 15, and conditions can change rapidly with weather.
Directions
From Saguache, drive 22 miles west on Highway 114, then 19 miles west/northwest on Forest Road 750 (County Road NN14), and 17 miles south on Forest Road 787.
