About
Stone Cellar Campground is a remote, high-elevation campground located in the breathtaking Saguache Park grasslands of Rio Grande National Forest. At 9,486 feet, the campground offers 6 campsites spread across wide-open fields with spectacular views of the La Garita Mountains and the nearby La Garita Wilderness. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and sun shade. Saguache Creek flows directly next to the campground, providing excellent fishing opportunities for rainbow, cutthroat, brown, and brook trout right from camp. The campground serves as an ideal base for wilderness hiking, big game hunting, OHV riding on forest roads #774 and #776, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. The Stone Cellar Guard Station cabin is located approximately half a mile away and can be reserved separately. Due to the extremely remote location, visitors must travel 58 miles from Saguache, with 36 miles on dirt roads that can become impassable during mud or snow. Roads are subject to seasonal closures from March 15 to May 15, and the area experiences moderate use during the operating season.
Directions
From Saguache, take Colorado Hwy 114 northwest for 34 miles over North Pass. Turn south onto Forest Road 804 for 4 miles, then east 1 mile to Forest Road 787. Continue 21 miles south to the campground, located past the Stone Cellar Guard Station. Note: there is a stream crossing before arriving at the cabin gate.
