White River National Forest

Wheeled Vehicles in Wilderness

This order describes the prohibition of wheeled vehicles in all National Forest Wilderness Areas of the Rocky Mountain Region and any exceptions thereof.

About

Halfmoon Campground is a remote, high-elevation campground located at the top of Tigiwon Road (FSR 707) in the Eagle-Holy Cross Ranger District of White River National Forest. Situated in a forested setting near the Holy Cross Wilderness boundary, the campground serves as a primary access point for hikers attempting Mount of the Holy Cross, one of Colorado's famous fourteeners, as well as Notch Mountain and other wilderness destinations. The campground provides vault toilets but no potable water, so campers must bring their own water supply. Due to increasing bear activity in the area, a food storage order is in effect requiring all food and refuse to be stored in hard-sided vehicles, approved bear-resistant containers, or suspended at least 10 feet clear of the ground and 4 feet horizontally from any supporting tree or pole. Access requires driving 8 miles on Tigiwon Road, a rough dirt forest road that begins near Minturn off Highway 24. The road conditions and short parking spurs within the campground make it unsuitable for most RVs. All wilderness regulations apply when traveling beyond the campground into Holy Cross Wilderness, including foot and horse travel only.

Directions

From I-70 Exit 171 (Minturn), travel south approximately 5 miles on Highway 24. Turn right onto Tigiwon Road (FSR 707) and continue 8 miles on rough dirt road to the campground at the road's end.
