About

Camp Hale Memorial Campground is located 15 miles south of Minturn, Colorado within the Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument at an elevation of 9,200 feet. The campground sits in a wide, open valley with sparse young lodgepole pine growth, a result of beetle infestation that removed much of the original tree cover. The setting offers minimal shade but expansive mountain views. The site holds significant historical importance as the training ground for the 10th Mountain Division during World War II. Approximately 15,000 soldiers trained here in mountaineering and skiing techniques before seeing combat in Italy. Most original buildings have been demolished, but foundations and other remnants remain, with interpretive signs along US Route 24 explaining the history. The 99th Infantry Battalion (Viking Battalion) also trained at this location. Recreation opportunities abound with the Colorado Trail crossing within walking distance and gravel roads providing easy walking and biking paths throughout the Camp Hale area. Anglers can fish for rainbow and brown trout in the Eagle River headwaters and numerous small streams nearby. A food storage order is in effect due to bear activity, requiring all food and refuse to be stored in hard-sided vehicles or approved bear-resistant containers.
