About

Piney Designated Dispersed Site is a primitive dispersed camping area located along National Forest System Road 701 (Piney River Road) in the Eagle-Holy Cross Ranger District of White River National Forest. The sites are situated in Township 4 South, Range 81 West, Sections 22, 23, and 14. This scenic corridor follows Piney Creek through forested terrain north of Vail, offering access to the Piney Lake area. As designated dispersed camping, there are no developed facilities. Campers must bring their own potable water and pack out all trash. Bear-resistant food lockers are being installed during summer 2026 to help prevent wildlife conflicts. Sites are free and available first-come, first-served with no reservation system. Group size is limited to 15 people from June 21 through November 22 under Forest Order WRNF 2022-04, which remains in effect through December 31, 2028. Zone 2 camping restrictions apply from May 21 through September 1, limiting stays to 7 days within any 30-day period at any location within a 20-mile radius.
