About

Black Canyon Group Campground sits within Guernsey State Park, a 6,200-acre recreation area surrounding Guernsey Reservoir in the heart of southeastern Wyoming. The park represents one of the finest examples of Civilian Conservation Corps construction in the Rocky Mountain region, with hand-hewn structures built during the 1930s including the Guernsey Museum, The Castle, and Brimmer Point. The group campground provides a designated gathering space for larger parties seeking a primitive camping experience along the reservoir's eastern shore. All campsites include fire rings and picnic tables, with access to comfort station restroom facilities. The park's 12 campground areas are scattered around the reservoir, accessible via scenic Lakeshore Drive which winds along rocky cliffs overlooking the water. Recreational opportunities include fishing and boating on the 2,370-acre reservoir, exploring 14 miles of restored CCC-era hiking trails starting at Brimmer Point, and visiting nearby Oregon Trail landmarks. The wagon ruts carved by thousands of pioneer wagons are visible just south of Guernsey, and Register Cliff preserves the names inscribed by westward travelers. Water services are available May through September. The park operates under a 14-day limit within any 30-day period.
