Castle Shelter

Open

Castle Shelter is a day-use picnic facility, not an overnight campground. The shelter is available for group reservations from May 1 through September 30 at $66 per day plus applicable day-use fees. Overnight camping is not permitted at this location.

About

Castle Shelter stands as the largest and most elaborate picnic shelter in Guernsey State Park, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the mid-1930s as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's conservation and employment programs. The impressive log and stone structure is considered one of the finest examples of CCC rustic architecture in Wyoming. The shelter features a giant fireplace and winding steps that lead visitors to an observation area providing spectacular panoramic views of the park and surrounding landscape. The arch on the west end of the structure perfectly frames a scenic view of Laramie Peak. This is a day-use facility designed for group picnicking, not overnight camping. The shelter may be reserved from May 1 through September 30, up to 4 months in advance. Reservations can be made online or by calling the Wyoming State Parks Reservation Call Center. Overnight camping is available elsewhere in the park at various campgrounds including Sandy Beach, Sandy Point, Lower Spotted Tail, and Skyline.
