About

The Castle at Guernsey State Park stands as one of the most elaborate picnic shelters in the nation, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. This iconic two-story structure combines stonework and log construction, featuring a massive fireplace and winding stairs that lead to an observation deck with stunning views of Guernsey Reservoir and the surrounding landscape. As a day-use facility, The Castle provides a memorable venue for group picnics and gatherings. The shelter's architecture and craftsmanship exemplify the quality work of the CCC, making it both a functional facility and a historic landmark. The structure frames Laramie Peak through a distinctive stone archway, creating a dramatic backdrop for visitors. Guernsey State Park offers extensive recreational opportunities around the reservoir, including camping, boating, fishing, and hiking. The park's riparian areas, open grasslands, canyons, and timbered hillsides provide excellent wildlife viewing and bird watching opportunities throughout the year.
