About
Grandfather Mountain State Park provides a true backcountry camping experience in the North Carolina mountains with 13 designated primitive campsites accessible only by foot. The terrain is rugged and challenging, with hikes to campsites ranging from 2.5 miles with 944 feet of elevation gain to 5.5 miles with over 2,000 feet of elevation gain. All sites are hike-in only with no vehicle access. The campsites are distributed along the park's trail system, including sites along the Grandfather Trail and other backcountry routes. Each site accommodates 1-6 campers. There are no facilities at the campsites, no water sources, and no trash collection. Campers must be self-sufficient, carrying in all supplies and packing out all trash. Dispersed camping outside designated sites is prohibited. Reservations are made through the North Carolina State Parks system, and all campers must complete a camping permit before setting up camp, even with a reservation. Permits can be obtained at self-registration kiosks near the Boone Fork Parking Area. Access to the park's backcountry is currently available through the Boone Fork Parking Area on the Blue Ridge Parkway or the Asutsi parking area, as the Profile Trail parking area remains closed following Hurricane Helene damage.
Directions
