Roan Mountain State Park Campground

Open — The campground is currently open with sites available for reservation. However, the upper campground loops remain closed due to bridge damage from Hurricane Helene in September 2024. TDOT is developing plans to replace the bridge, and the upper loops are expected to remain closed for the next few years. The lower campground remains fully operational. The camp store and laundry facility are closed for the winter season. Only Bathhouse 94 in the lower area near sites 10 and 11 is open during the off-season.

About

Roan Mountain State Park Campground sits in the rugged Appalachian highlands of northeastern Tennessee at the base of the majestic 6,285-foot Roan Mountain. The park protects over 2,000 acres of rich hardwood forest along ridges and valleys, with the cool, clear Doe River winding through the property and supporting a healthy trout population. The campground offers 110 family campsites divided between lower and upper loops. The lower loop features 86 RV sites with water and electric hookups, while a separate tent area provides 20 sites with water access but no electricity. Four group tent sites accommodate up to 25 people each with gravel pads, picnic tables, fire rings, grills, and water spigots. All family campsites include picnic tables and grills, with access to bathhouses equipped with hot showers. A dump station, dumpsters, and recycling bins are located at the campground check-in. Wi-Fi is available throughout the campground, and a cell phone booster assists Verizon Wireless customers. There are no sewer hookups at any sites. The park also features three primitive backcountry campsites along the Rosebay Ridge Trail for hikers seeking a more remote experience. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the Roan Highlands and surrounding trails, though Hurricane Helene in September 2024 caused significant damage requiring ongoing repairs to the upper campground bridge and several trails.
