* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. * WHERE...Southern Burke County in western North Carolina... * WHEN...Until noon EDT. * IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 606 AM EDT, Earlier today, a prolonged period of steady rainfall produced 3-6 inches across Burke County, saturating area soils. Doppler radar shows several rounds of torrential rainfall have moved through the area from the south, capable of producing 1.5-3 inches of rainfall on top of saturated soils. This rainfall will cause new areas of Minor flooding to develop. Hunting Creek in Morganton is in Minor Flood and still rising. It will crest close to Moderate flood stage of 10 ft. At this stage, Coal Chute Road will be flooded near the gage. - Areas of greatest concern include along Hunting Creek near Morganton; poorly draining areas of Morganton and other urban areas along US 70; Silver Creek south of Glen Alpine; and Henry and Jacob forks of the South Fork Catawba River near South Mountains State Park. - Some locations that will experience flooding include... West Central Caldwell County in western North Carolina... * Until 700 AM EDT. * At 355 AM EDT, Doppler radar indicated new rounds of heavy rainfall are approaching northern Burke, western Caldwell, and southeastern Avery County. Between 4 and 6 inches of rain have fallen over the past 12 hours with an additional 1-2 inches of rainfall possible. Several streams remain above Minor Flood Stage, including the Wilson Creek and the Johns River. Flash flooding is ongoing and new areas of flash flooding may develop within the next 1-3 hours. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by heavy rain. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Expect flash flooding of low-lying areas near streams, including parks, trails, low-water crossings, boat- access areas, and campgrounds. Significant flooding of poor-drainage areas are likely, impacting travel. Brown Mountain CUA Roadside Campsites are primitive dispersed camping sites located along Forest Road 299 in Burke County, within Pisgah National Forest's only designated off-highway vehicle area. The area serves as a base camp for OHV enthusiasts accessing 34 miles of trails designed primarily for trail bikes and ATVs, with Jeeps and 4WD vehicles limited to Trail 8 and part of Trail 1. The roadside sites are free to use and provide basic facilities including pit toilets and picnic areas at the trailhead. While the camping is free, all vehicles must display a permit ($5 daily or $30 annual pass). The area operates seasonally from April 1 through January 1. Alcohol is strictly prohibited throughout the trail system and dispersed camping zones. For campers seeking more developed amenities, Mortimer Campground is located approximately nine miles from the Brown Mountain Trailhead. The Collettsville General Store, about 6 miles from the camping area, offers groceries, gas, and prepared food.

From Collettsville, NC, head north on NC Highway 90. Turn left onto Brown Mountain Beach Road, then continue onto Forest Road 299. Dispersed campsites are located along FR 299.
