About

Located on the banks of the Merced River about 20 miles south of Modesto, George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area Group Campground provides a dedicated space for group camping in California's San Joaquin Valley. The park was established in 1953 when former California Lieutenant Governor and State Senator George J. Hatfield donated the land. The group campground accommodates 9-50 people and includes a large barbecue pit, sinks with running water, serving areas, picnic tables, and benches. The park offers more than a mile of river frontage, making it ideal for fishing, kayaking, river wading, and nature study. All camping is tent-only, with campers parking in a general lot and walking to their sites. Facilities include flush toilets, drinking water, and coin-operated showers. Dogs are allowed in the campground on leashes 6 feet or shorter but are prohibited on trails and beaches. Reservations are made through ReserveCalifornia and can be booked up to six months in advance. The group site is priced at $150 per night. Day use hours are 8 a.m. to sunset.

Directions

From Interstate 5, take the Newman exit into Newman and continue east on County Road J-18 for five miles. The park entrance is just past the San Joaquin River bridge.
