George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area Group Campground is located along the Merced River in California's San Joaquin Valley, about 20 miles south of Modesto. Named after former California Lieutenant Governor and State Senator George J. Hatfield, who donated the land in 1953, this 46.5-acre park offers a peaceful riverside setting with native oak trees and diverse wildlife. The group campground accommodates up to 25 people and includes a large barbecue pit, sinks with running water, serving areas, picnic tables, and benches. The site is accessible via a short walk from the parking area. Two restrooms with drinking water are located nearby. Campfires are permitted in designated fire rings, and gathering firewood is prohibited. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The park features over a mile of Merced River frontage, providing opportunities for fishing, swimming, kayaking, and river wading. Popular activities include picnicking, birdwatching, hiking, and nature study. The park has spacious grassy fields and native riparian zone trees. Summer temperatures typically range from 85-100°F, with winter temperatures around 45-50°F. Dogs are allowed in the campground on leashes but not permitted on trails or beaches.

Directions

From Interstate 5, take the Newman exit into Newman and continue east on County Road J-18 for five miles. The park entrance is just past the San Joaquin River bridge.
