McConnell State Recreation Area is a scenic 74-acre park located on the banks of the Merced River, four miles east of Delhi in California's Central Valley. Named after Thomas McConnell who homesteaded the site in 1871, the park offers a year-round haven for outdoor enthusiasts seeking riverside camping and recreation. The campground is nestled beneath a canopy of towering cottonwood and sycamore trees, providing natural shade and a tranquil atmosphere. The slow-moving Merced River is the park's centerpiece, offering excellent fishing opportunities year-round. Anglers can expect to catch largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, bluegill, catfish, and other species. Swimming and wading are popular summer activities, with beach areas near the day use and campground facilities, though visitors should be aware of deep holes and steep banks along the river. The park features family and group campsites accommodating RVs up to 30 feet for motorhomes and 24 feet for trailers. Amenities include restrooms, drinking water, and picnic areas. The grassy fields and shaded camping areas provide relief from the hot Central Valley summers. The park also offers hiking trails and nature study opportunities within the 74-acre preserve. Campfires are permitted in provided fire rings, but wood gathering is prohibited. Reservations are available through ReserveCalifornia, and the park is open year-round from 8:00 AM to sunset.

Directions

The recreation area is 4 miles east of Delhi. From the South Avenue exit off Highway 99, go east to Pepper Street, turn right. Continue south to 2nd Avenue, turn left. Proceed to McConnell Road and the park entrance.
