Ft. Braden Primitive Campsites Lake Talquin State Forest

Open

Open year-round. Reservations available up to 11 months in advance via Florida State Forests reservation system. No potable water available; all gear and supplies must be carried from the parking lot. Fire restrictions may apply during county burn bans.

About

Located within the Fort Braden Tract of Lake Talquin State Forest, these primitive campsites provide a secluded wilderness experience in the rolling hills above Lake Talquin. The forest spans over 19,300 acres across Gadsden, Leon, and Liberty Counties, featuring steep ravines, hardwood slopes, and scenic lake overlooks that distinguish this area from typical Florida terrain. Two individual tent campsites sit on bluffs overlooking the lake and are accessible only by hiking the moderately strenuous trail system, or by paddling or boating to the shoreline. Each site accommodates up to 8 campers. A third group campsite near the trailhead allows vehicle access and holds up to 20 people, with three paddocks available for equestrians. All sites have fire rings and picnic tables. Recreation includes three hiking loops ranging from 2.6 to 4.4 miles with steep inclines and narrow footing, two equestrian loops of 5-6 miles each, fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing. Campers must pack in all gear and water from the parking lot. A vault restroom and picnic pavilion are located at the Fort Braden Trailhead, with a second pavilion near the tent sites on the Center Loop trail.
