Frontenac State Park's cart-in campground offers rustic camping for those seeking a more secluded experience than the park's main campground. The sites are located about a quarter mile from the parking area along a paved, accessible trail, with carts provided at the trailhead to help campers transport their gear. Each site features a tent pad, picnic table, fire ring, and food locker, with vault toilets accessible nearby. The park itself occupies a scenic stretch of blufftop terrain overlooking Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River, making it one of Minnesota's premier birdwatching destinations with over 260 recorded species. Spring and fall migrations bring exceptional viewing opportunities, and a wildlife observation blind at Pleasant Valley Lakelet enhances the experience. The park offers 13 miles of hiking trails, including the challenging Bluff Side Trail that descends 430 feet via wooden stairs and switchbacks. Reservations are available online through the Minnesota DNR reservation system and open 120 days in advance. The cart-in sites are designed for tent camping only, providing a quiet retreat for campers who want a step above the main campground's amenities while enjoying the park's natural beauty.

Directions

From Red Wing, travel southeast on US Highway 61 approximately 10 miles. Turn right onto County Road 2 (Frontenac Drive) and follow signs to the park entrance. The cart-in campground parking area is accessible via the main park road.
