Frontenac State Park Backpack Campsites

Open

Open for camping year-round. Reservations required and available 120 days in advance through the Minnesota state parks reservation system online or by phone.

About

The backpack campsites at Frontenac State Park offer a primitive camping experience for those willing to hike into Minnesota's Mississippi River bluff country. Sites B1 and B2 are located approximately 1.4 miles from the nearest parking area, providing a secluded escape within this 2,800-acre park. The hike in passes through hardwood forests that attract migrating warblers and raptors, making this a favorite destination for birders during spring and fall migration seasons. These backcountry sites feature the standard Minnesota state park primitive amenities: a tent pad, fire ring with firewood provided, and primitive toilet facilities. As with all Minnesota backcountry campsites, these are not accessible by motor vehicle. Campers should be prepared to pack in all supplies including water and pack out all trash. The park overlooks Lake Pepin, a natural widening of the Mississippi River, and offers over 13 miles of hiking trails through bluff prairies and oak forests. Reservations are required and can be made up to 120 days in advance through the Minnesota state parks reservation system.

Directions

From US Highway 61 in Frontenac Station, turn east on Goodhue County Road 2 and follow signs to the park entrance. The backpack sites require a 1.4-mile hike from the trailhead parking area.
