About

Freeman Reservoir Campground is a rustic destination in northwestern Colorado's Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, positioned along the shores of Freeman Reservoir at roughly 8,200 feet elevation. The campground offers 18 sites with a mix of pull-through and back-in configurations, each equipped with a fire grate and picnic table. Two vault toilets serve the facility, and garbage services are provided. The campground particularly caters to equestrian users, with corrals and horse trailer parking on site. Freeman Reservoir itself is a scenic mountain lake where fishing is permitted but motorized watercraft, including electric motors, are prohibited. The surrounding area provides access to trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, though no motorized trail access originates from this campground. The California Park area lies nearby, though it closes May 15 through July 1 annually to protect Greater Sandhill Crane nesting habitat. The campground operates seasonally from mid-June through late October or mid-November, weather dependent. Sites are first-come, first-served with no reservations. Campers should note that potable water is not available and payment is exact cash or check only.
