Sandstone Cabin sits in a clearing surrounded by lodgepole pine, aspen, and mixed conifer forest at 8,200 feet elevation in the Sierra Madre Range. The historic cabin is furnished with a queen bed and bunk beds, accommodating up to six guests. Amenities include propane-powered cook stove, refrigerator, heater, and lights, plus limited solar power for lights and small appliances. The bathroom features a shower and flush toilet. The kitchen is equipped with basic cooking and eating utensils.
The cabin is nestled among beautiful aspen trees in an area frequented by moose, elk, deer, and bears, making it ideal for wildlife viewing. Nearby recreation includes fishing in streams and alpine lakes, day hiking and backpacking on trails including the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, and exploring the Battle Highway scenic drive featuring historic copper mining sites from 1897-1908. The cabin sits within the Sandstone Work Center compound, accessible entirely via paved roads including State Highway 70.
Directions
From Encampment, Wyoming, travel west on State Highway 70 approximately 26 miles to the Sandstone Work Center. Turn right into the compound and the cabin is on the left. From Baggs, Wyoming, travel east on State Highway 70 approximately 32 miles to the Sandstone Work Center on the north side of the highway. Access is entirely on paved roads.
