About
Elkhead Reservoir State Park is located in the scenic Yampa Valley of northwest Colorado, offering a high desert oasis centered around a 900-acre reservoir. The park provides diverse recreational opportunities including boating, swimming, jet skiing, fishing for warmwater species, wildlife watching, hiking, and camping. The park features 46 campsites across two distinct campgrounds. Pronghorn Campground offers 30 sites with electric hookups near the boat ramp on the reservoir's shoreline. Bears Ears Campground, located on the south end of the reservoir, provides 16 non-electric sites. All campsites include hardened gravel pads, picnic tables, shade shelters, fire pits, and parking pads. Six sites are ADA-accessible. Many campsites sit near the shoreline and may be accessible by boat. The park has restrooms and trash service but no water or dump station on-site; however, campers can access a dump station at nearby Yampa River State Park (12 miles west) starting May 1. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with pronghorn antelope common in spring through fall and elk visible in late fall and winter. The reservoir is stocked with warmwater fish including largemouth bass, black crappie, and bluegill. The park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with camping available May 1 through November 30.
