About
Starrigavan Campsites offer primitive camping in the heart of a temperate rainforest within the Tongass National Forest, located seven miles north of Sitka at the end of Halibut Point Road. The recreation area features 34 campsites spread across three loops, including standard drive-in sites, tent-only sites, group areas, and walk-in sites. The campground sits within diverse forest, estuary, and marine habitats characteristic of Southeast Alaska. The area provides excellent opportunities for hiking, with trails including the Estuary Life Boardwalk Trail, Forest and Muskeg Trail, and Mosquito Cove Trail. Wildlife viewing is exceptional, with possible sightings of brown bears, spawning coho and pink salmon, bald eagles, great blue herons, river otters, and Sitka black-tailed deer depending on the season. Kayaking trips to nearby Katlian Bay and Siginaka Islands are popular. Access to Sitka is by boat or airplane only; the campground is a two-minute drive from the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry Terminal. Bear-proof food lockers are provided at sites due to the active brown bear population. The Old Sitka State Historic Site is nearby.
Directions
Located 7 miles northeast of Sitka at the end of Halibut Point Road, 3/4 mile from the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry Terminal. No roads connect to Sitka; access is via Alaska Marine Highway or Alaska Airlines. From the ferry terminal, turn left and follow Halibut Point Road to the recreation area. From the airport, cross Japonski Bridge to downtown Sitka and take Halibut Point Road north 7 miles.
