About
Frank Gross Campground is a small U.S. Forest Service campground located approximately 2 hours north of Atlanta in the North Georgia Mountains of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The campground features eight campsites arranged for privacy along Rock Creek within the Ed Jenkins National Recreation Area. Sites 2 and 5 are positioned directly beside the creek, offering prime access for anglers pursuing stocked and wild trout.
The 5-mile drive to the campground along Rock Creek Road is scenic, following the creek and passing the Chattahoochee National Fish Hatchery. The hatchery, located approximately a quarter-mile downstream, offers an informational visitor kiosk, outdoor raceway viewing, picnicking, and an Environmental Education Center.
North Georgia's mild climate provides four distinct seasons, with particularly stunning fall foliage in October when summer greens transform into vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. The area is excellent for wildlife viewing, with abundant deer, turkey, bear, and small furbearers. Nearby hiking opportunities include the Benton MacKaye Trail approximately 4 miles north, which features a 260-foot suspension bridge over the Toccoa River, and the Appalachian Trail about 4 miles south. Other nearby Forest Service campgrounds include Cooper Creek, Mulky, and Deep Hole Recreation Area, all within 15 minutes.
