About

FR 171 Campground is a dispersed camping area tucked along Old Rim Road (Forest Road 171) in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, just behind the Mogollon Rim Visitor Center. The area features multiple established campsites scattered through a forest of towering Ponderosa pines at approximately 7,700 feet elevation, providing a remote and scenic camping experience. As a designated dispersed camping area, FR 171 operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees or reservations required. No amenities are provided: there is no potable water, no restrooms, and no trash service. Campers must be fully self-contained and practice Leave No Trace principles, packing out all trash and properly disposing of human waste at least 100 feet from water sources. Campfires are permitted when no fire restrictions are in effect, using existing fire rings where available. The 14-day stay limit within any 30-day period applies. Summer temperatures typically range from 68-80°F during the day with cooler nights. The area is popular and sites fill quickly on weekends during peak season.

From Payson, travel east on Highway 260. Turn right into the Mogollon Rim Visitor Center. Continue to the back of the parking area and look for Forest Road 171 towards Al Fulton Picnic Ground. Continue a few miles past the picnic area to find established campsites along the road.
