Fox Creek Cabin

Fox Creek Cabin is a historic former ranger station nestled in a small clearing surrounded by dense evergreen forest in the Gallatin Mountain Range. At approximately 6,700 feet elevation along South Cottonwood Creek, the cabin offers solitude and direct access to scenic backcountry trails with views of 10,154-foot Mount Blackmore and wildflower meadows. The small cabin accommodates a maximum of two people with bunk beds and mattresses. Amenities include a wood stove for heating and cooking, table and chairs, basic cookware, dishes, and utensils. An adjacent fire ring and vault toilet are provided. There is no electricity or running water; guests must bring their own water supply or treat natural sources. Firewood is not provided but dead and downed wood may be gathered. Wildlife in the area includes grizzly and black bears, wolves, mountain lions, moose, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and Canada lynx. A food storage order is in effect. The South Cottonwood and History Rock Trails provide access for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing depending on conditions.

Directions

From Bozeman, MT: Summer access (June 16 - December 1): Drive south on S. 19th Ave. for about 7 miles. Turn left onto Hyalite Canyon Road (FS 62). Drive 6.3 miles to Langohr Road (FS 6230). Continue about 5 miles to road's end. Hike approximately 2.5 miles on Trail 424 to the cabin. Winter access (December 2 - June 15): Drive south on S. Cottonwood Road for about 7.5 miles. Turn left onto Cottonwood Canyon Road and drive 2.1 miles to South Cottonwood Trailhead. Hike approximately 6 miles on South Cottonwood Trail 422 to the cabin access trail. A four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended.
