Maxey Cabin

About

Maxey Cabin sits at the end of a half-mile access road off Hyalite Canyon Road, surrounded by evergreen forest and the steep ridges of the Gallatin Mountains. The main log cabin accommodates 4 people on bunk beds with mattresses and is heated by a wood stove. A smaller adjoining cabin adds space for 2 more but is only available during summer months. Outside you'll find a vault toilet and a campfire ring. There is no water or electricity at the cabin. Guests must pack in drinking water, bedding, cooking equipment, lanterns or flashlights, matches, toilet paper, and all food. Bear-resistant food storage is required as grizzlies, black bears, and other wildlife frequent Hyalite Canyon. Candles are prohibited indoors. The cabin provides excellent access to Hyalite Peak trailhead with its famous waterfall hikes, backcountry skiing terrain, and some of Montana's premier ice climbing. Hyalite Reservoir is roughly a mile away for fishing and paddling. Elk hunting is popular in the canyon during fall.

Directions

From Bozeman, drive south on S. 19th Ave for about 7 miles. Turn left onto Hyalite Canyon Road (FS 62). Drive 11.1 miles to the Maxey Cabin access road on the left (east) side. Travel about 0.1 mile to the gate (combination provided with reservation), then continue 0.5 mile to the cabin. During spring closure (March 31 through May 16), park at the Maxey Cabin access road pullout and hike or bike approximately 9 miles. In winter, park at the pullout and ski or snowshoe the final 2/3 mile.
