Hyalite Pavilion

Closed — Currently closed for winter. The facility is open year-round for day use from sunrise to sunset, but Hyalite Canyon Road closes annually April 1 through May 16 for spring maintenance and may be inaccessible during winter months due to snow.

About

The Hyalite Pavilion is a day-use picnic facility located next to scenic Hyalite Reservoir in the Custer Gallatin National Forest, approximately 15 miles south of Bozeman, Montana. The pavilion was constructed through a partnership between the Gallatin National Forest, Montana State University School of Architecture, and local partners, designed to provide a sheltered group picnic facility that blends into the natural setting while taking advantage of beautiful mountain and forest views. The 20x50 foot pavilion features non-movable seating for approximately 30 people at three tables, with additional space for portable tables and chairs to accommodate up to 80 people. Inside are two barbeque grills and a fireplace, with an additional fire ring surrounded by sitting boulders outside. An accessible vault toilet is located approximately 250 feet away along an accessible trail. A hand pump for water is available about 100 yards from the pavilion during summer months. Hyalite Reservoir, constructed in the late 1940s, offers excellent recreational opportunities including boating, canoeing, and fishing for cutthroat trout and arctic grayling. The day-use area features a boat launch, ample parking, and access to numerous hiking trails including the West Shore Trail. Hood Creek Campground is located approximately 1.5 miles away for those seeking overnight accommodations. The pavilion can be reserved for $170 or used first-come, first-served when not reserved. Hyalite Canyon Road is closed annually from April 1 through May 16 for spring maintenance.

Directions

From Main Street in Bozeman, travel south on 19th Avenue for 7 miles to the paved Hyalite Canyon Road. Turn left and continue approximately 9 miles to the Hyalite Day Use parking area. The Pavilion is located at the far end of parking area.
