About
Window Rock Cabin offers a year-round retreat in one of Gallatin National Forest's most popular recreation areas. Built in 1940, this rustic cabin sleeps four people on twin beds with mattresses and is heated by a wood-burning stove that can also be used for cooking. The cabin includes a table with chairs, broom, and dustpan. Outside, there is a campfire ring and a vault toilet. A horse corral with space for six horses is available. Nestled in Hyalite Canyon among evergreen forest and the steep ridges of the Gallatin Mountains, the cabin sits near Hyalite Creek. The area features beautiful wildflower meadows in summer and pristine snow in winter. This is important habitat for grizzly bears, bison, elk, mule deer, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, wolves, and mountain goats. Recreation opportunities abound. Hikers and equestrians can access the Hyalite Peak trailhead leading to waterfalls in the Gallatin Range. Hyalite Canyon is a popular destination for backcountry skiers and ice climbers. Hyalite Reservoir, a mile away, offers non-motorized boating and trout fishing. Bicyclists can use Hyalite Canyon Road, and elk hunting is excellent in the fall. Guests must bring their own water, garbage bags, bedding, lighting, toilet paper, and matches.
