Window Rock Cabin
Open year-round. Hyalite Canyon Road (FS 62) closes to motorized vehicles from the evening of March 31 through May 15 annually; during this period, renters must hike or bike approximately 12 miles to reach the cabin. Winter access requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle or skiing up to 12 miles, as the road is infrequently plowed. No refunds for weather-related access issues.
About
Window Rock Cabin is a historic Forest Service rental built in 1940, nestled in Hyalite Canyon amid evergreen forest and the steep ridges of the Gallatin Mountains. The cabin offers a year-round retreat 15 miles south of Bozeman, just a mile from Hyalite Reservoir. It sleeps four people on twin beds with mattresses, and a wood-burning stove provides both heat and cooking capability. Firewood is supplied for indoor use. The cabin is primitive: no electricity, no running water, and no cell service. Water must be packed in or treated from nearby Hyalite Creek. An accessible vault toilet outhouse is located outside, and an outdoor campfire ring is available. A six-horse corral accommodates equestrians. Guests must bring their own bedding, lighting, water, matches, garbage bags, and extra toilet paper. All trash must be packed out. Hyalite Canyon is renowned for waterfalls, backcountry skiing, ice climbing, and trout fishing. Two accessible trails lead to the canyon's waterfalls, and the Hyalite Peak trailhead provides access to the Gallatin Range. This is grizzly bear country, and a food storage order is in effect.
Directions
From Bozeman, drive south on S. 19th Ave. for about 7 miles. Turn left onto Hyalite Canyon Road (FS 62). Drive approximately 12.7 miles to the Window Rock Cabin access road and gate on the right. Use the cabin combination to unlock the green gate, close the gate behind you, and continue 0.1 mile to the cabin.
