About
Maxey Cabin is a historic recreation rental cabin situated on the northeast edge of a large meadow in the Custer Gallatin National Forest, approximately 15 miles south of Bozeman, Montana, east of Hyalite Reservoir. The main cabin accommodates 4 guests on bunk beds with mattresses and is heated by a wood stove. A propane lantern provides light, and basic furnishings include a table and chairs. An adjacent smaller cabin offers 2 additional bunks for summer use only, as it lacks heating. The cabin operates year-round but access varies seasonally. From mid-May through December 1, the cabin is accessible by vehicle via Hyalite Canyon Road (FS 62). During the winter season (December 2 through March 31), guests should prepare for challenging access requiring four-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicles, or skiing/snowshoeing up to 12 miles to reach the cabin. From April 1 through May 16, the road closes entirely to motorized vehicles, necessitating a 9-12 mile hike or bike ride. Nearby recreation opportunities include the Hyalite Peak trailhead for hikers and equestrians, accessible waterfall trails in Hyalite Canyon, and Hyalite Reservoir just one mile away offering non-motorized boating and trout fishing. Guests receive a combination lock code in their confirmation email for cabin access.
Directions
