Maxey Cabin offers a quaint mountain retreat in one of Gallatin National Forest's most popular recreation areas. The main cabin features bunk beds with mattresses for up to 4 people, a wood stove for heat, table and chairs, and a propane lantern. An unheated smaller cabin available only in summer provides additional sleeping space for 2 more people. A vault toilet and campfire ring are located outside. The cabin is nestled in Hyalite Canyon, surrounded by wildflower meadows in summer and pristine snow in winter, with evergreen forest and the steep ridges of the Gallatin Mountains all around. Hyalite Reservoir is nearby, and the area provides excellent access to hiking, cross-country skiing, ice climbing, fishing, and hunting opportunities. Guests must bring their own drinking water, cooking gear, bedding, and other necessities. The cabin is vehicle accessible in summer months. During winter, the final mile to the cabin is not plowed and requires skiing or snowshoeing. Spring road closures from April 1 to May 16 close Hyalite Canyon Road completely, requiring approximately 9 miles of hiking, skiing, or biking to reach the cabin.

Directions

From Bozeman, drive south on S. 19th Ave. for about 7 miles. Turn left onto Hyalite Canyon Road FS 62. Drive 11.1 miles to the Maxey Cabin access road on the left (east) side, before Hood Creek Campground. Travel about 0.1 miles to the gate, unlock with provided combination, close gate behind you, and continue 0.5 miles to the cabin at the northeast edge of a large meadow.
