About
The Carderock Recreation Area Pavilion is a large covered picnic shelter situated within the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, just south of Great Falls and Mather Gorge. The pavilion is open on three sides and can accommodate up to 200 guests, making it ideal for large group events, reunions, and gatherings. Ample parking is available in two convenient lots flanking the pavilion.
The location offers exceptional access to outdoor recreation. The Billy Goat Trail, featuring three sections (A, B, and C), provides some of the most challenging and scenic rock scrambling in the mid-Atlantic region. Section C is directly accessible from the recreation area. Carderock is also renowned as one of the most popular rock climbing destinations near Washington, D.C., drawing climbers from across the eastern United States. Additional activities include woodland hiking on trails suitable for all skill levels, fishing in both the C&O Canal and Potomac River, and exploring the historic canal towpath.
The area showcases stunning natural features including dramatic views of the Potomac River gorge and unique geological formations that demonstrate the power of water erosion over millennia. Restrooms are located near parking lot B, and the facility is easily accessible from the Clara Barton Parkway.
