About

Fort Dupont Park encompasses 376 rolling wooded acres, making it one of the largest parks in Washington, D.C. The park features three reservable picnic areas ideal for group gatherings, as well as additional picnic sites available on a first-come, first-served basis. Oak, beech, and maple trees blanket the hillsides, and a large area of mountain laurel provides beautiful blooms each spring. Beyond picnicking, the park offers diverse seasonal activities including hiking trails, mountain biking, Civil War educational programs, gardening opportunities, environmental education, concerts, and special youth programs. The park is part of the Civil War Defenses of Washington and contains historic earthworks from that era. Nearby attractions include Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, Smithsonian Anacostia Museum, Anacostia Park, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, and the Anacostia River Trail, making Fort Dupont Park an excellent base for exploring the area east of the Anacostia River.
