Special Weather Statement issued April 12 at 2:12PM EDT by NWS Morristown TN
Relative humidity values of around 30 to 35 percent and wind gusts of 20 to 25 mph are expected from late morning through the early evening hours. When combined with the recent lack of rainfall, this will lead to elevated fire danger across the area. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Also, remember to obey local burn bans and refer to local officials. Visit dof.virginia.gov for additional information.
About
Flatwoods Group Picnic Area offers a secluded forest setting perfect for group activities and special events in Virginia's Jefferson National Forest. The facility centers around a covered picnic shelter equipped with modern amenities including electrical outlets for crockpots and small appliances, sinks with running water, and a large built-in charcoal grill. The shelter serves as a food preparation and serving area, while outdoor picnic tables provide dining space. A paved parking lot provides convenient access to the shelter and nearby flush toilet facilities. Open lawn areas adjacent to the picnic shelter offer space for horseshoes, sports, and games. The location is ideal for exploring the surrounding Clinch Ranger District, with the Guest River Gorge Trail (5.8 miles on old railroad grade), Chief Benges Scout Trail, and Little Stony Falls Trail all within easy driving distance. The facility is behind a locked gate, with access provided through the Ranger Station. The area is surrounded by hardwood and hemlock forest typical of southwest Virginia's mountains, with mountain laurel and rhododendron adding seasonal color. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with migratory songbirds in summer and year-round forest species.
