Cranesnest Campground

About

Cranesnest Campground is located along the Cranesnest River arm of John W. Flannagan Reservoir, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility in Dickenson County, Virginia. The reservoir, created by the completion of John W. Flannagan Dam in 1964, features nearly 40 miles of scenic shoreline surrounded by the rolling green Cumberland Mountains. The campground provides approximately 32 campsites, including RV sites with electric hookups and tent-only sites with electric service. Facilities include bathhouses with showers, playgrounds, picnic shelters with grills, horseshoe pits, and boat launch access. The reservoir is well-known among anglers as a fishing paradise, with secluded coves stocked with bass, walleye, and trout. The lake is maintained at nearly 1,400 feet above sea level and offers opportunities for boating, canoeing, and wildlife viewing. Nearby Breaks Interstate Park provides additional recreational opportunities including whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and hiking. The campground enforces a 14-day stay limit within any 30-day period, and reservations are available through Recreation.gov.

From Clintwood, VA main street turn left onto Route 83. Travel 2.6 miles and turn left onto Cranesnest Campground Road. Travel 2.8 miles to the campground.
