Special Weather Statement issued March 23 at 3:38AM EDT by NWS Raleigh NC

3:38 AM — 10:00 PM

The combination of dry fuels, low relative humidity around 25 to 30 percent, and wind gusts up to 20 to 30 mph will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires today across the Piedmont and Sandhills of central North Carolina. People in this area are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks, and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and education, please visit the North Carolina forestry or environmental protection website.

About

Falls Lake State Recreation Area is one of North Carolina's largest recreational facilities, encompassing a 12,000-acre reservoir located just 10 miles from Durham and 12 miles from Raleigh in Wake County. The recreation area features over 300 campsites distributed across multiple campgrounds including Holly Point, Rolling View, Shinleaf, and Beaverdam. The campgrounds offer diverse camping options from full-service RV sites with electric and water hookups to primitive hike-in sites for backcountry enthusiasts. Each established campsite includes a picnic table, outdoor grill, tent pad, and lantern hook. Bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers are centrally located within each camping loop. The recreation area provides excellent access to Falls Lake for boating, fishing, and swimming, with dedicated camper-only boat ramps at select campgrounds. Miles of hiking trails wind through the area, and in spring and fall, migrating monarch butterflies add seasonal beauty to the landscape. The campgrounds provide 24-hour access for campers during the operating season when sites are reserved or occupied. Reservations can be made online through the North Carolina State Parks system or by phone. The recreation area charges a per-vehicle entrance fee daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and on weekends in April, May, and September. With its proximity to the Triangle area and extensive recreational opportunities, Falls Lake State Recreation Area serves as an accessible getaway for both weekend campers and longer stays.
