Eno River State Park

Eno River State Park provides backcountry camping experiences along the winding Eno River, approximately 10 miles northwest of downtown Durham. The park offers two backpack camping areas: Fanny's Ford with 5 sites (1-mile hike from parking) and Piper Creek with multiple sites (1.2 miles from Cole Mill access). Two group campsites are also available: Cox Mountain accommodates up to 26 people with a 3/8-mile hike, while Buckquarter Creek has two sites holding 15 people each, requiring a 1.2-mile hike. All camping here is primitive and hike-in only. Each site includes a tent pad, fire ring with benches, and lantern hooks. Group sites also have picnic tables. Pit toilets serve each camping area, but there is no potable water anywhere in the backcountry; campers must carry in all water and supplies. Firewood is provided free to campers when available. The park spans seven access points across Durham and Orange counties, offering over 30 miles of hiking trails along the often shallow but swift-moving Eno River. The river creates scenic landmarks like the Cascades and provides opportunities for paddling, fishing, and birdwatching. Reservations are required and can be made up to 6 months in advance through NC State Parks.

Directions

The park has five access points in Durham. Fews Ford Access & Visitor Center is located at 6101 Cole Mill Road. Other access points include Cabelands Access (4950 Howe St.), Pleasant Green Access (4770 Pleasant Green Road), and Pump Station Access (4023 Rivermont Road). Cole Mill Access (4390 Old Cole Mill Road) is currently closed.
