About
Elks Group Campground is a six-acre fenced group facility in Coconino National Forest at 6,500 feet elevation, offering a cool respite from the valley heat below. This campground was designed and constructed by the Winslow Elks Lodge and donated to the Mogollon Rim Ranger District, serving as a premier group camping destination for up to 300 people. The site sits in a transition zone where ponderosa pines gradually give way to stands of pinyon and juniper trees, near the spectacular Mogollon Rim escarpment that stretches across two-thirds of Arizona. The campground provides picnic tables, fire rings, a horseshoe court, poles for volleyball nets, a small swing set, and a flagpole. Water is supplied via a 250-gallon tank, and garbage disposal is provided. Vault toilets are available on-site, though groups exceeding 50 people must provide supplemental toilet facilities such as port-a-pots for every additional 25 people. Parking accommodates up to 50 vehicles. There are no utility hookups. Nearby recreation includes C.C. Cragin Reservoir and Knoll Lake for water-based activities, while the Arizona National Scenic Trail, General Crook National Recreation Trail, and historic Cabin Loop Trail System offer opportunities for hiking, bicycling, and equestrian use. Several fire lookout towers are located in the area. The community of Happy Jack, a few miles away, provides convenience stores, restaurants, and gas stations.
