The campground operates seasonally mid-May through early September, first-come, first-served only. A temporary closure for invasive species management was scheduled to end December 8, 2025. About
Knoll Lake Campground offers a secluded forest camping experience at the edge of the spectacular Mogollon Rim, the 2,000-foot escarpment marking the southern boundary of the Colorado Plateau. At 7,493 feet elevation and roughly 80 miles southeast of Flagstaff, this primitive campground provides excellent access to the 75-acre Knoll Lake, a picturesque body of water stocked with rainbow trout where only single electric motors are permitted. The campground operates mid-May through early September on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Single sites accommodate up to 8 people and 2 vehicles for $20/night, while double sites handle up to 16 people and 4 vehicles for $40/night. Senior and Access Interagency pass holders receive a 50% discount. Cash only; the nearest ATM is over an hour away. Facilities include vault toilets, potable water, picnic tables at each site, and fire pits with grills. Quiet hours run 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. with no generators permitted. Pets must be leashed at all times, and horses are prohibited within the campground. The 14-day stay limit applies. Access roads are gravel but suitable for sedans.
Directions
From Flagstaff, drive 55 miles south on Forest Highway 3 (Lake Mary Road) to Clints Well. Turn left onto AZ 87, go about 10 miles to FR 95 just past the ranger station. Turn right and drive 6 miles south to FR 96, turn left and travel 2 miles to FR 321. Turn right and drive 10 miles to FR 300. Turn east (left) and go 4 miles to FR 295E. Turn left to the lake and campground. Forest Highway 3 and AZ 87 are paved; all Forest Roads are gravel but suitable for sedans. FR 95 is closed during winter.
