About
Long Valley Group Campground occupies the grounds of a historic Forest Service work center in the Coconino National Forest, surrounded by stately ponderosa pines at 6,950 feet elevation. The Mogollon Rim location provides a cool respite from the summer heat of the valley below. The campground is specifically designed for large group gatherings, accommodating 10-300 people and up to 50 vehicles. Amenities include picnic tables, grills, vault toilets, potable drinking water, and a large communal fire ring. Groups exceeding 50 people must provide additional portable toilets for every 25 additional guests. The maximum vehicle length is 45 feet. There are no utility hookups or dump station. Horses are prohibited, and amplified music or PA systems are not permitted. The surrounding area offers excellent recreation opportunities. C.C. Cragin Reservoir and Knoll Lake provide water-based activities, while the Arizona National Scenic Trail, General Crook National Recreation Trail, and historic Cabin Loop Trail System serve hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians. The nearby community of Happy Jack has a gas station, convenience stores, and restaurants.
Directions
From Flagstaff, drive 55 miles south on FH 3 (Lake Mary Road) to AZ 87 at Clint's Well. Turn right onto AZ 87, drive approximately one mile and turn left onto Forest Road 141. Travel 0.5 mile on FR 141, then turn right onto Forest Road 147A for 0.7 miles. The campground is on the left. From Payson, drive 36 miles north on AZ 87 toward Clint's Well, turn right onto FR 141, then right onto FR 147A.
