About
Mogote Campground occupies a scenic location at 8,400 feet elevation along the fast-flowing Conejos River in Rio Grande National Forest. The campground is divided into two distinct loops: the lower loop sits adjacent to the river with many sites offering direct water views, while the upper loop provides a more wooded setting. The entire area is shaded by groves of ponderosa pine, cottonwood, spruce, willow, and aspen trees. The Conejos River is designated as a Gold Medal River, meaning it offers exceptional trophy trout fishing opportunities with healthy populations of rainbow and brown trout. Anglers can fish directly from many campsites in the lower loop. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding wilderness, with popular trails including the 15-mile Elk Creek Trail and the 10.9-mile South Fork Conejos Trail. With 40 campsites including 21 pull-through sites, Mogote accommodates both transient and destination campers. The campground is also conveniently located near the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in Antonito, which offers a 64-mile journey through historic mining country on America's highest and longest coal-fired, steam-operated narrow-gauge railroad.
Directions
From Antonito, Colorado, go west on Highway 17 about 15 miles to the campground access road. Turn right and travel 0.25 miles to the Upper Loop Road.
