About

Elk Creek Campground lies just off Highway 21 in a beautiful valley at the foot of the Sawtooth Mountain Range in central Idaho's Sawtooth National Recreation Area. This small, intimate campground consists of one group site that can be reserved for up to 40 people, or operates as three individual campsites on a first-come, first-served basis when the group site is not reserved. Campers park in a paved parking area and walk a short distance to their campsites, which are nestled among lodgepole pines that provide partial shade. Summer wildflowers are abundant, and Elk Creek flows nearby. The campground's location in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area provides access to approximately 750 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, including the Idaho Centennial Trail. The expansive Elk Meadow adjacent to the campground is a prime spot for bird watching and observing elk and moose. Numerous lakes and streams in the area, including the Salmon River, offer excellent fishing for rainbow and native Westslope cutthroat trout. Stanley Lake and Redfish Lake are nearby for boating, water skiing, canoeing, and kayaking. Summer temperatures are cool, with average highs around 78 degrees and lows around 40 degrees.

Directions

From Stanley, Idaho, take State Highway 21 west approximately 8 miles. Turn north at milepost 123 onto Forest Road 892 and follow the road to the campground.
