About
Egan Basin Guard Station is a rustic retreat in the Montpelier Ranger District of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest in southeastern Idaho, near the Utah border. The single-room A-frame cabin accommodates up to 15 people with two single beds, a sleeping loft, table and chairs, and a wood stove for heat. Firewood may be available. An outhouse with vault toilet and picnic table are located on-site. No water or electricity is available, and guests must bring all drinking water, cooking equipment, utensils, bedding, light sources, and emergency supplies. This is a pack-it-in, pack-it-out facility. Situated at 7,500 feet elevation in an open meadow surrounded by mixed conifers and aspens, the guard station offers expansive views of the limestone and dolomite peaks of the Bear River Mountains. Wildflowers dot the landscape in summer. The area supports large populations of deer, elk, and moose, along with pikas, marmots, and beavers in nearby streams. The guard station provides access to trails for hiking, mountain biking, and off-road vehicles in summer, plus snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter. Anglers can fish nearby Beaver Creek, and hunting areas are located in the vicinity. The cabin is accessible by car during warmer weather but requires snowmobile or ski access in winter when snow is present.
Directions
From Montpelier, Idaho, follow Highway 89 south 17 miles to St. Charles. Turn west on 200 North and continue west 1.5 miles to Forest Road 411 (Green Canyon). Follow FR 411 west/southwest to Forest Road 415. At this intersection, follow the signs west 5 miles to the guard station sign, then turn south for 1/4 mile to the guard station.
