About
Echo Lake Campground is located on the west end of the Echo Trail, a remote country road traversing the heart of the Western Superior National Forest. This quiet campground offers a peaceful alternative to the area's resort scene, set among aspen, balsam, spruce, maple, and pine trees that provide ample shade. The campground features 22 sites with 13 reservable through Recreation.gov (including one group site for up to 21 people) and 9 first-come-first-served sites. Three additional dispersed campsites accessible only by boat are scattered around the lake. Echo Lake spans 1,222 acres and is a popular fishing destination for walleye, northern pike, panfish, black crappie, white sucker, and yellow perch. The campground includes a boat ramp, sandy swimming beach, and access to hiking trails including the 1.5-mile Echo Lake Trail and 10-mile Echo Lake Hunter Walking Trail. Nearby attractions include Voyageurs National Park, Crane Lake, and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, making this an ideal base camp for wilderness canoe trips. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets and solar-powered drinking water are available. Most sites can accommodate RVs and campers up to 45 feet. Dogs are allowed but must remain leashed (6-foot maximum) and kept in tent or vehicle overnight. No ATVs or horses permitted. External firewood is prohibited; use local sources only.
