About
Douglas State Forest encompasses 5,907 acres along the Massachusetts border with Connecticut and Rhode Island, making it one of the region's larger and more diverse state forests. The centerpiece is Wallum Lake, which provides swimming, boating, and fishing opportunities during the warmer months. The forest features an extensive trail system suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding in summer, with cross-country skiing and snowmobiling available in winter. The Midstate Trail, a long-distance hiking route, passes through the forest. A unique feature is the Atlantic White Cedar swamp, with a 5-acre portion designated as a Massachusetts Wildland, accessible to visitors via a boardwalk trail. Camping facilities include sites accessible through the state's reservation system. The forest provides basic amenities including restrooms, a boat ramp, swimming beach, picnic areas, and pavilions. Parking fees apply during the peak season from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
