About
West Hill Park is a day-use recreation area managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the West Hill Dam and Reservoir Project. Spanning 567 acres along the West River, the park features diverse habitats including white pine and red oak forests, rolling meadows, red maple swamps, and wetlands that support abundant wildlife including deer, fox, great blue herons, and over 200 bird species. The park offers two sandy swimming beaches with a separate area for pets, nearly 5 miles of nature trails for hiking and mountain biking, an accessible playground, sand volleyball court, and flush toilet facilities. Three group picnic shelters accommodate gatherings of 30 to 100 people. The West River provides fishing opportunities for trout, bass, pickerel, and horned pout, while seasonal hunting for deer and small game is permitted in accordance with state laws. Visitors can enjoy ranger-led nature programs, special events like the Family Fishing Fair in June, and cross-country skiing in winter. The park operates as a day-use only facility with no overnight camping. A pack-in, pack-out trash policy is in effect. Entry fees are $5 per vehicle, $2 for walk-ins or bikes, with free admission for federal pass holders.
