About
George Washington State Campground is a primitive overnight camping facility located within the 4,000-acre George Washington Management Area in Glocester, Rhode Island, on the shores of Bowdish Reservoir. The campground offers 80 sites spread across several loops, including 57 standard gravel sites suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs, 17 tent-only sites, four rustic cabins, two Adirondack-style group shelters accommodating up to 20 persons each, and seven backcountry hike-in platforms on the Angell Loop requiring a 0.4-0.6 mile hike. The facility is primitive with no electrical, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites. Drinking water is available from shared spigots throughout the campground, and restroom facilities consist of pit toilets and solar-powered composting toilets. A dump station is available for registered campers. Each site includes a fire ring, and campers must purchase firewood locally to prevent pest spread. Recreational opportunities abound, including swimming at the campground beach, fishing and canoeing on Bowdish Reservoir, and hiking on trails ranging from 2 to 8 miles. The cabins are rustic structures with two bunk beds (boards only, no mattresses) and require campers to bring their own bedding and gear.
Directions
From Providence, take Interstate Route 6 West to Route 295 North to Route 44 West. Follow Route 44 West approximately 13.5 miles; the campground entrance is on your right.
