About
Devil's Hopyard State Park campground provides 21 spacious wooded sites in a scenic setting near the park's signature feature, Chapman Falls, which cascades more than 60 feet over a series of steps in Scotland Schist stone formations. The park encompasses 1,000 acres along the Eightmile River, designated as a National Scenic and Wild River by the U.S. Forest Service. The campground offers access to hiking trails, excellent birding opportunities, and fishing for brook and brown trout in clear, cool stream waters. The park is renowned for its perfectly cylindrical potholes ranging from inches to several feet in diameter, some of the finest examples of pothole stone formations in the region. Legend says the devil burned holes in the stones with his hooves, though geologists attribute them to stones trapped in eddies that wore depressions through friction over time. This established campground operates seasonally with basic amenities. Each site accommodates up to six people with a maximum stay of 14 days. The campground provides portable toilets but does not have running water, so campers must bring their own. Two additional youth group sites are available for qualified organizations with advance reservations, accommodating 30 to 50 campers.
